Trials completed at Columbia University Medical Center have resulted in alopecia areata sufferers regaining complete hair growth just five months after being prescribed the drug Ruxolitinib which is used to treat Bone Marrow disorders.

Alternative use

Alopecia areata results in patchy baldness and is a disease that affects approximately 2 in every 1000 people in the UK. It is believed to be caused by the immune system attacking hair follicles and it is these immune cells that the drug targets. After successful preliminary trials conducted on mice, three human candidates suffering from mild to severe alopecia were then given twice daily doses of Ruxolitinib. The results have been described as dramatic, with all three patients having experienced regrowth within a five month period. Dr Raphael Clynes, the lead researcher on the project is optimistic about the drug’s potential saying, “We’ve only begun testing the drug in patients, but if the drug continues to be successful and safe, it will have a dramatic positive impact on the lives of people with the disease.”

A “Major Step Forward”

Unlike other types of hair loss, alopecia areata is most likely to occur in teenagers and young adults, and can be a particularly distressing disease owing to the age groups it affects. As this type of baldness is not hormone related, in the way male pattern baldness is thought to be, this medication is not suitable for hormone-related hair loss. However, there are very few treatments that have proven effective when tackling alopecia areata and the new findings have been welcomed by many within the medical industries. Professor David Bickers, a dermatologist at Columbia University expressed his delight by saying, “This is a major step forward in improving the standard of care for patients suffering from this devastating disease.”
