Recruiting the right staff can have huge benefits for your company. However, getting it wrong could mean you waste both valuable time and money. Here are a few tips on how to recruit the right staff for your business.

Understand what you’re looking for

Before you jump into hunting for the right employee, you need to know exactly what you’re looking for. Sit down with all the relevant team members and write down the job role and detailed description, as well as a company profile, if one doesn’t already exist. This will help the agency to know what you’re looking for, especially in terms of experience, salary requirements and personality. Profiling the company will enable them to learn about your business values and the vision for the future, so they can see how the new employee will fit in.

Research the market

If you’ve never recruited before, dealing with agencies can be a tricky process. You first need to check out what’s available both locally and in terms of industry specific agencies. Whether you opt for a locally based company or one with a more regional or national spread will depend on the type of role you’re recruiting for and the availability of the skills you require. Whichever you choose, you need to look at how long the business has been established and the experience of the team. If they’re specialists in a certain field, you’d expect the majority of the account team to have worked within the industry at some point.

The right agency is important

However, if the candidates don’t meet your requirements, then they’re just wasting your time. When you’re selecting an agency to use, make sure you consider how they interview and select the candidates that they forward on to you. It’s vital that they’ve met with the candidates before they recommend them. They can’t learn everything about a person, especially their professionalism and attitude, simply from reading a CV or talking to them on the phone. They need to understand the skills and experience that a candidate has, in order to match them with your requirements. A quality agency will work closely with you to understand exactly what you’re looking for in an employee, which can improve the efficiency of the recruitment process.

Building relationships

Once you’ve found a good agency, it’s important to build up a long term relationship with them. The likelihood is that you’ll be recruiting more staff in the future and it’s always good to go back to a company you can trust. This way they’ll start to understand your business in far greater detail and know exactly what type of candidate you’re looking for. They’ll also be more willing to dedicate time to searching for the right employee, improving the speed of the recruitment process in the future.

Finding the right person for a role starts with finding the right recruitment agency. Once you’ve got this sorted most of the hard work will be done for you. Then it’s just up to you to interview and select the perfect candidate.
