Ten job hunting tips

In today’s market, job-hunting can feel like banging your head off a brick wall. It can be easy to become dejected and lose motivation but it’s important not to give up. Whether you’re looking for your first job or taking the next step along your chosen career path, here are ten job hunting tips to help you on your way.

Look everywhere

Gone are the days when all you had to do was buy a newspaper every week. Now there are a million websites to check, notice boards to look at, emails to read, agencies to register with and, of course, the job centre to visit. Exploring every avenue ensures you don’t miss out on your dream job.


Many companies don’t advertise all vacancies but instead rely on word of mouth to find the right person. Keep in touch with former colleagues and managers and be sure to let them know you’re looking for a new challenge. You never know when an opportunity might come up at their new workplace you want to be the first person they think of when it does.

Use social media

For many employers, the first thing they’ll look at after your CV is your online presence. Therefore, it’s important to keep your LinkedIn account up to date and make sure that there’s nothing off-putting on your Twitter, Facebook or Google+ profiles. Don’t be afraid to use social media as a networking tool as well.


ten job hunting tipsBefore you even start applying for jobs you need to do some research into the kind of work you’re looking for. Research becomes even more important if you’re offered an interview. You should at least be aware of what the company does and what your role would involve. Being able to display some knowledge shows you’re serious about the position, organised and willing to put in effort.

Tailor your application

Countless surveys have shown that generic applications are a serious pet hate of employers. Each time you apply for a job tailor your cover letter and CV to that particular role. Potential employers are much more likely to sit up and take notice if you take the time to show you understand the role and what will be expected of you.

Practice interviews

Preparing for an interview is one of the most important things you can do to help you land a job. Consider the kind of questions that are likely to come up and think about how you might answer them. Get someone to practise with you so you can visualise what the actual interview will be like.

Gain experience

For many industries there’s no getting round the importance of experience. Of course, it’s often difficult to gain experience if nobody will give you a job but taking elements of past roles and showing how you could adapt them to the position you’re applying for can make a huge difference.

Think outside the box

Have you seen the story about the advertising intern who created a Lego CV? Or the web product manager whose CV resembled an Amazon product page? You don’t have to go quite that far but take some time to consider the type of person your application is being sent to and try to make it stand out from the crowd.

Ask for feedback

If you’ve applied for a job you’d love but it was offered to someone else then ring up your contact and ask why. Obviously you don’t want to sound arrogant but getting feedback about where you might have done better will set you in good stead for being successful in your next application.

Be persistent

Particularly if you’ve been at it a while, job hunting can be pretty brutal on your self-esteem. Giving up isn’t going to get you any further though so keep on at it and don’t lose focus.
