Are you a good communicator?

We might all think we’re good at communicating, but it’s about much more than just what we say.Could you boost your communication skills and become a better friend,family member etc. Being an effective communicator involves being a good listener, dealing with stressful issues and using body language. Taking steps to improve your skills can be beneficial in both your professional and personal lives.

Be a good listener

Communicating is not just about you; it’s also about listening and reacting to what others around you say. If you don’t listen and understand what’s being said to you, then it can lead to negativity from the other party. Being a good listener is about showing your interest in the speaker and engaging with them.

When you’re involved in a conversation, make sure you focus on the other person. Don’t be looking around, fidgeting or playing with your phone. In order to feel engaged, they need to know that you’re listening intently to them and concentrating on their message. In group situations, it’s important that everyone involved understands exactly what’s being said, as this can help avoid problems later on. Not listening to a conversation can mean that you misunderstand a vital piece of information.

There’s the temptation to interrupt people and bring the conversation back to you, but you need to avoid this and listen to them first. Don’t spend the entire time thinking about what you want to say. You need to ignore your own feelings and provide support and understanding, rather than criticism. Even if you don’t agree with a point of view, assess the situation and decide whether it’s worth creating conflict.

Concentrate on body language

How someone acts when they’re talking is just as important as what they say. You can improve your communication skills by concentrating on your own body language, as well as taking the lead from how others act. Everything from how you stand and your facial expressions to your tone of voice and eye contact can have an impact on your message.

Throughout your daily life, try and see how others behave and how this affects the message that they’re portraying. Look at all the elements throughout a conversation, not just one movement in isolation. A quick glance to the side doesn’t mean anything if there rest of their body language shows their interest. Your body language can also help you hide how you’re truly feeling. You might be scared or emotional on the inside, but by showing positivity through your actions you can change someone’s view of you.

Deal with issues

Being an effective communicator is also about dealing successfully with potentially stressful situations. You’re not always going to agree with everyone and conversations can sometime become particularly heated. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to turn into an argument. How you react to these moments can take the tension away.

Try and stay calm and don’t inflame the situation further. If possible, it’s a good idea to take time away from the conversation to relax and calm down. If you can’t do this, try and bring a bit of light relief or humour to the conversation to dispel the pressure. By talking and listening it’s possible to come to a compromise position, or at least agree to disagree. One of the most important points in these situations is to keep your emotions under control.

By working at these details, they’ll become much more natural. Try and use them in everyday situations and you’ll soon become much more effective at communicating with everyone.
