Craniosacral therapy is a holistic treatment that uses gentle touch to work with the body. The therapist places their hands lightly on different parts of your body including your sacral at the base of your spine and your cranio at the base of your skull. They can then ‘listen’ to what is going on throughout your body by tuning into the sensations that they pick up through their fingers. Craniosacral therapy during pregnancy is a safe holistic treatment to try.

The idea is that your body responds to this sensitive touch by starting to listen to itself and a common experience during and after a craniosacral session is that you have been really listened to and heard. It is a holistic treatment which means it works on all levels including physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, and treats the whole body rather than just the areas that the therapist touches. Craniosacral can help people of all ages with many different conditions ranging from minor to acute. It can be an affective therapy at times when others are contra-indicated such as after an injury or an accident because it is so gentle and non-invasive. This is also why it makes a great support treatment during pregnancy.

Is craniosacral therapy safe during pregnancy?

During pregnancy a woman can experience dramatic changes in her body and in her relationships to both herself and those around her. These changes can be unsettling and at times uncomfortable. Receiving sessions of craniosacral creates a supportive space in which the woman can receive support to re-balance herself and her physical body, relieve any stress that is pregnancy or other related and deepen her connection with her growing baby.  On a deeper level the treatments can also relieve a person from past physical and emotional trauma. Therapeutic touch is known to be an extremely powerful healer and if received in pregnancy it can also increase the chances of the mother then being able to pass on touch of the same quality to her new child.

Setting up a supportive relationship like this at a time like pregnancy also creates a safe space to verbally explore any fears about the oncoming events knowing that she will be understood and heard without judgement.

The benefits

An important physical benefit from pregnancy craniosacral sessions is to gently improve the mobility of the mother’s pelvis so that her baby can more easily take up the ideal position for birth, this work can promote a timely and easier birth for both the mother and the baby. Pregnant women who have had these sessions have also reported the following benefits; relief of cramping and back pain, resolving foot pain and treating sciatic or other nerve pain; release of pelvic, vaginal or groin pain and improved pelvic floor strength and function. Sessions have also been given to women to promote healing after difficult births and have helped with promoting recovery from tears and stitches and also helping recover from Caesarean birth.

The sessions will take place in a private room, with a space set up with seating and cushions to support a pregnant woman. There will be time at the beginning spent talking about how the mother to be is feeling emotionally and physically, what her birth plan is and whether there are other things going on for her that need some attention from the treatment.
