Life can become really stressful at times. Whether you have a lot going on through work or in your personal life, it can often seem like it’s becoming too much. Listening to music can release stress, it’s been discovered by a group of scientists that listening to 50 minutes of dance/uplifting music can really help to eliminate stress.

What the scientific findings tell us

The research was carried out by scientists at the Sussex University. It was actually done to see how patients in hospital can be encouraged to recover quicker. Separate studies have also been carried out that have shown music can have a big effect on patients who are under anaesthetic. It lowered their stress hormones and encourages a pleasurable state.

Different types of music have different effects on the body. 300 people were told to listen to 50 minutes of happy dance style music and various other genres.shutterstock_100837657 The ones who listened to the dance music had decreased stress hormone levels compared to those who listened to other types of music. It was found that uplifting music boosted immunity, while relaxing music reduced stress. However, what’s most important is a person’s own taste in music. If you listen to music that you enjoy the most, it will have the maximum positive effect on your health. This is why music is often used as a form of therapy.

It’s been shown that music can also help those who suffer with the following problems:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Insomnia
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Depression
  • Phobias

It really does have a calm, relaxing effect on the mind and body. Take time out to listen to relaxing music when you’re feeling stressed and it will really help to eliminate the problem.

Explore different forms of music

In order to find out which type of music has the most beneficial effect on you, it’s important to try out different genres. Listen to music you’ve never thought about listening to. This can include natural sounds such as birdsong, whale music and instrumentals. You might just come across a genre that really relaxes you.

It’s also important to ensure you’re listening to music in an environment where you won’t be disturbed. If you’re interrupted while you’re listening to music you won’t be able to fully relax. If possible you should lie back and close your eyes too. This allows the music to travel through to your subconscious; helping you to reach a deeper level of relaxation.

There are so many ways you can try to eliminate stress from your life. Listening to uplifting music is one of the most effective. So, the next time you’re feeling a little low and stressed out, shut the door, lock the world out and put on some dance music. Within an hour you’ll be feeling a lot calmer and ready to take on anything. If you tend to only listen to depressing music, make a change and try out something new. You may just be surprised by how good you feel afterwards.
