Healthy summer picnic

Written by: theworkingparent
When the summer arrives we all suddenly think of having picnics, but the contents in that basket may not always be healthy. We tend to get the chequered blanket and basket out and fill it with the first thing we lay our hands on.
When was the first picnic?
The very first picnics go all the way back to the 14th century, and were more like medieval hunting feasts. There were no bottles of wine or blankets inside in those days. Times have changed and what we tend to do now is see the lovely sun shining, out comes the basket and in goes all the wrong foods.
In the 14th century the picnics were stuffed with baked meats like ham and pastries, nowadays we pack the picnic with brownies, sausage rolls and all the wrong unhealthy foods.

Ditch the unhealthy picnic for a change
It may be delicious but it isn’t nutritious, remember when you pop that piece of fried chicken into your basket you are going to be eating around 510 calories just in that one piece!
There is no need to stop the picnic, just ditch the bad food you pop into it.
Here are a few ideas:
Fresh fruit such as strawberries, kiwi and pineapple chunks
Veg such as carrot sticks, pepper chunks and sweetcorn
Rye breads
Low fat cream cheeses
Skinless chicken drumsticks and lean meats
Pasta salad, mix pasta with lots of healthy veg and tuna, drizzle with low fat yogurt
Save your waistline the next time you go on a picnic, and swap the fatty foods for tasty, healthy alternatives.
