We’ve all done it: you go to the supermarket intending to buy just a few bits and come out with a trolley full of goodies you didn’t really need. So how do you ensure you spend only what you need to in the supermarket and how can you make your money go further when buying the weekly food shop? Here’s The working parent supermarket saving tips.

Be aware of your surroundings

Supermarkets are there to make money. Therefore they do everything they can to encourage you to spend as much as they can. In fact, millions of pounds are poured into research about consumers’ shopping habits so that the perfect environment can be created for us to spend more than we need to. Being aware of the tricks used will help you find the best value for money. For example, items with the highest profit margins tend to be placed at eye-level. Shoppers in a hurry may just grab the first one they see without really looking around. However, by widening your span up and down the shelves, you are likely to find less expensive alternatives.

Don’t take the children

This includes partners as well if they’re prone to adding items to the trolley as you work your way around the supermarket! The fewer people you take with you, the faster you’ll get around and you’ll have fewer people making requests with a wide-eyed “pleeeaaasse!”

Make a list

Before you set off to the supermarket, make a list of the things you need to buy. Planning the week’s meals in advance makes this easy and discourages you from buying extras that you don’t really need or may not even end up being used. Obviously there will often be one or two things you need that you’ve forgotten to put on the list and while it’s fine to add these items to your trolley, don’t try to convince yourself that you forgot to list that litre tub of ice cream, even if it is on offer.

supermarket saving tipsOften we stick to the brands we know but supermarket own brands can be just as good quality yet cheaper. Some supermarket own products are made in the very same factory to the same spec as branded foods, the only difference is the packaging and the price. Each week choose two or three items to replace with ‘lower’ brands and see if you notice a difference. If not, then stick with the least expensive version.

Use a small trolley or a basket

Chances are, whatever you choose, you’re going to fill it. Using a smaller trolley makes it look like you’re buying more than you actually have while a basket will limit you to only buying what you can physically carry. This is particularly important if you’re popping into the shop for a mid-week top up of bread or milk. If that’s the case, don’t pick up a basket. You’ll only end up filing it with stuff you didn’t go in for.

Use your coupon

Couponing has really taken off in the UK and more and more people are taking advantage of money-off vouchers. Of course, you should try only to use the coupons for products you would buy anyway but they are a great way of saving a bit extra cash and keeping your shopping bill under-budget. Loads of coupons are available to print off online and it’s worth picking up store magazines to check what they’re offering too.

Collect (and use) points

Many of us have Tesco Clubcards or Nectar cards in our wallets but the trick to getting the most out of them is to remember to use them! Whenever you pay for something in a supermarket use the appropriate card to earn points. Don’t forget that points collected usually transfers into cash so don’t forget to spend the points you’ve earned too!
