Preparing to sell your house can take a lot of time and effort. It’s not just a case of sticking a ‘for sale’ sign up outside and hoping for the best.

There are a number of things you need to do before you’re ready to let potential buyers come to view the property. Taking the time to ensure everything is just right could really increase the value of your home and ensure it sells pretty quickly.

If you’re unsure of where to start then the tips below should help.

Remove your own personal stamp

Every home is unique to the individual/family that lives in it. Even if you don’t realise it, when potential buyers come around they will see your life.

What you need them to see is their potential future life – to do this you need to basically remove your personality from the home. In fact, you should try to let go of the thought that it is your home. There’s no room for emotions when you’re trying to sell.Take down family pictures before potential buyers come around and paint the walls a neutral colour. You ideally want to turn the house into a blank canvas, ready for a new family to start their own chapter in.

De-clutter everything

The thing about clutter is it makes the home look untidy. Over time you don’t really notice clutter building up.preparing to sell your home Maybe you shove everything in a drawer to be ‘sorted out later’?Of course, later never seems to come so the clutter pile just gets bigger. Now you’re selling your home it’s important to get rid of everything you don’t need.Be absolutely ruthless. When was the last time you used it? If it’s been longer than six months to a year then there’s a good chance you don’t actually need it.Make sure all worktops are clear and the home is looking as organised as possible before prospective buyers pop around.

Make improvements

This is potentially the most important tip you should follow. Take a look around the house – is there anything that could do with being upgraded or replaced? Now is the time to sort out even the smallest problems.

Make those repairs you’ve been putting off for so long. Do you have any drawers that don’t close properly? How about squeaky doors? Does the home look up to date? Making just a few minor repairs and improvements will really help to increase interest and add a little value to the home too.

These are the top three tips every homeowner should follow when trying to sell their homes.

Above all else just make sure that the property is clean and tidy and think about what you want to see when you look around a new home. Take care of both the outside as well as the inside of the house – plant new flowers in the garden and make the house look as welcoming as possible. Absolutely every little detail matters!
